What do you do when someone you love is hurting?

My husband Jeff has been suffering from pain in his leg for about three weeks. When we came back from our labor day holiday, his foot was hugely swollen. We called the cardiologist and went to see him, they ruled out a blood clot (Thank God) but have since sent him to the regular doctor. She was shocked to see the size of his leg and ankle and immediately contemplated putting him in the hospital for an infection to put him on IV antibiotics. So she gave him some really strong antiobiotics and told him if it wasn't better on Thursday then she was putting him in the hospital. Jeff is not a complainer so it really worries me when he is in obvious pain and is telling me he is in pain. But how do you help? What do you do? How can you make the pain go away?
